Ferox
Pike

The Corrib is a mecca for flyfishermen. The limestone lough is rich in flylife with hatches occuring throughout the season. Hatches start in March when the Lake Olives appear then as May approaches the Mayfly starts and this is probably known as the cream of the fishing and this can last well into June. July and August can be quiet although evening time can bring great sport on the warm summer days. However, by now the lough is full of salmon and grilse and it is not uncommon for these to take a fly. September sees the brownies back on the feed with the crane fly or more commonly known daddy long legs which are blown onto the water. Together with the grasshopper the top of the water sport can really be exciting. Dry fly fishing at its best.
Even though I have flyfished the Corrib since the late 80s, recent years my passion has been hunting Ferox. The Corrib holds some of the biggest trout in Euope. I have been fishing and targeting the large ferox for over 12 years and have had some great fish. Recently catching the new Corrib Record of 23lb 12oz. All my fish are returned safely back to the water. However, my previous best fish caught last year of 19lb 8oz I have on display in Burkes Bar in Clonbur. This is also the venue of the new record.
If pike is your passion then the Corrib will not dissapoint with 30lb plus fish taken each year. I have taken many pike into the low twenties while fishing for ferox as the methods and tackle are similar. These fish are incredibly strong and powerfull, to see a 20lb plus fish tail walking and screaming off line as it heads for the horizon is a real adrenalin buzz.
As with the ferox, there are certain hot spots on the lake which produce the better fish. If you are after that special fish I can take you to where they live!
